Okay so it’s been roughly two weeks since I left the great state of Pennsylvania and it’s been a quite the two weeks.
Although I am still getting used to hiking to school every morning and afternoon, the loud “winter” winds of Cape Town, and class sizes bigger than my high school, I’ve managed to find my routine throughout the city. We had our first week of classes this week. I’m currently taking a metaphysics and epistemology, international relations, philosophy of science, and an African studies class. No classes on Fridays for me! Too bad today has been incredibly unproductive! This trend cannot continue. All of my teachers are pretty cool. I already found my teacher crush. He’s the teacher for both my philosophy classes and ironically, he’s Scottish. Guess I just have thing for the Scots.
I never realized how low maintenance the people at Saint Mike’s are. My first class is at 9 AM. Granted, I have no problem getting up to go over the reality of the scientific method with my new Scottish friend, I’m not going to wake up early enough to put on layers of make-up. As I reach what feels like the top of Table Mountain for class, not only am I out of breath but I also feel as if I’m THE ONLY GIRL ON CAMPUS not dressed up. I don’t understand how they do it. Walking around campus at home it would not faze me to see girls in sweatpants. I know that Saint Mike’s is in its own bubble in Vermont which is basically like another bubble in itself. It’s unlike many schools, I get it. It’s the number of girls dressed up that throw me off. I think it is safe to say, I am the only girl on campus in my gym shorts. I guess my shorts and newly acquired ability to suck a straw through my two front teeth throws them off. Maybe I’ll start a new trend.
As for the guys, all I have to say is fear not. The shoeless population is well represented on UCT’s campus.
